SKIN & HAIR CONCERNS

Tan removal treatment in Chennai

A tan is extra melanin your skin produced to defend itself against UV — which is why it fades slowly and unevenly on its own in Chennai's year-round sun. Treatment speeds the reversal: exfoliating pigmented cells, calming the melanin response and protecting the result with daily sunscreen. What it cannot do is change your baseline skin colour.

Which type do you have?

Identifying the type matters, because each is treated differently.

Fresh tan

Recent darkening on the face, arms and neck after weeks of exposure. The fastest type to reverse.

Accumulated tan

Built over months of daily commutes and outdoor work. Sits deeper, looks patchy, and reverses gradually.

Tan lines & demarcation

Sharp sleeve, collar, watch and helmet-strap lines — the giveaway of two-wheeler commuting in Chennai.

Tan over pigmentation

Tanning layered on melasma or post-acne marks. Needs diagnosis first, because each layer is treated differently.

What causes it

  • Daily UVA/UVB exposure — commutes, outdoor work, school runs
  • No sunscreen, or sunscreen applied once and never reapplied
  • Deeper Indian skin types tan readily by design — melanin is doing its job
  • Reflected heat and glare from roads and buildings
  • Windows and cloud cover reduce burning but not tanning UVA

What actually helps

Sunscreen before anything else

Daily broad-spectrum SPF 30+ with reapplication. Without it, every procedure underperforms — the tan is re-created faster than it is removed.

Chemical peel course

Glycolic, lactic or mandelic peels lift pigmented cell layers gradually over a short course. Strength is chosen conservatively for Indian skin to avoid rebound pigmentation.

Medical facials

For fresh tan and dullness, a HydraFacial or medi-facial clears surface pigment and congestion with no downtime — useful before events.

Treating what is underneath

If the unevenness is partly melasma or post-inflammatory marks, the plan changes to pigment-directed care — one reason assessment comes before booking sessions.

Common questions

How long does a tan take to fade?

A fresh tan fades over several weeks once exposure is controlled; accumulated tan takes months. A peel course plus daily sunscreen shortens both substantially, but sun discipline decides how much of the result you keep.

Can tan be removed in one session?

A single de-tan session brightens surface dullness and is useful before an event. Established tan needs a short course — typically a few peels spaced weeks apart — because pigment sits across multiple skin layers.

Will tan removal make me fairer than my natural colour?

No. Treatment returns skin towards its own baseline by removing the pigment that sun exposure added on top. Nothing changes your constitutive colour, and any clinic promising that is overselling.

Which sunscreen works best in Chennai's climate?

A broad-spectrum SPF 30+ (PA+++) you will actually reapply — gel or matte textures suit humidity. The habit matters far more than the brand, and it is the single biggest factor in whether a tan returns.
