Dermatologist vs cosmetologist: who should you see?
A dermatologist is a doctor — MBBS plus a postgraduate dermatology qualification — who can diagnose, prescribe and manage complications. "Cosmetologist" is not a protected medical title in India; training varies from months of beauty coursework to a weekend certificate. For grooming and relaxation facials, a cosmetologist is fine. For anything that diagnoses skin, injects it, or fires energy into it, see a doctor.

Choose dermatologist if
- Acne beyond the occasional pimple, pigmentation, melasma or hair loss — these are medical conditions
- Any laser, medium-depth peel or injectable, especially on deeper Indian skin tones
- Anything changing, spreading, scarring or refusing to heal
Choose cosmetologist if
- Relaxation facials, cleanups and grooming with no medical claims attached
- Threading, waxing and basic salon care on healthy, problem-free skin

Can a cosmetologist do laser hair removal?
Many salons offer it, and that is exactly the problem: laser on Fitzpatrick IV–V skin needs wavelength and settings judgement, and someone qualified to manage a burn or pigmentation if it occurs. Energy devices belong under medical supervision.
Is a 'skin specialist' the same as a dermatologist?
Not necessarily. "Skin specialist", "skin expert" and "cosmetologist" are unregulated terms. A dermatologist holds MBBS plus MD (DVL), DNB or DDVL — ask for the qualification and registration number.
Do I need a dermatologist for a regular facial?
No — a good salon serves relaxation and grooming well. The line is crossed when skin is broken, acids go beyond superficial depth, or your skin has an active problem like acne that squeezing will worsen.
