What Chennai's water actually does to your skin and hair

Hard water leaves mineral deposits on hair and skin and makes soap harder to rinse, which produces dull, rough, tangle-prone hair and tight, itchy skin. What it does not do is make hair fall out of the follicle. Water causes breakage; shedding comes from somewhere else — and telling the two apart is the whole point.

What hard water actually is

Hardness is dissolved calcium and magnesium, picked up as groundwater passes through rock. It is not dirt, it is not a contaminant, and it says nothing about whether water is safe to drink.

In this city it varies street by street, because the supply does. Metro water, borewell water and tanker water are three different things arriving at three different addresses, and a household can be on all three across a year. That is why one neighbour swears the water ruined their hair and the next has never noticed anything — they may genuinely not be washing in the same water.

The two visible signs are the ones you already know: white scale on taps and the shower head, and soap that will not lather however much you use. Both are calcium and magnesium reacting with the soap instead of rinsing away.

What it does to hair

Mineral deposits build up along the hair shaft and lift the cuticle — the overlapping outer layer that lies flat on smooth hair. A roughened cuticle catches on itself, which is why hard-water hair tangles, feels coarse, looks dull rather than shiny and drags when a comb goes through it.

Soap scum compounds it. Where the surfactant binds calcium instead of rinsing clean, a residue stays on the hair and the scalp, which is the film people describe as never feeling properly washed.

The breakage follows from both. Hair that tangles gets pulled, and hair with a lifted cuticle is weaker across its length. What comes out in your hand is snapped mid-shaft rather than shed from the root.

It is worth being straight about how strong the evidence is. Laboratory work on hair treated with hard water has shown reduced strength and increased roughness, and the mechanism is not in doubt. The size of the everyday effect is less well established than the confidence of the internet on the subject would suggest. It is real; it is also rarely the largest thing going on.

The distinction that matters: breakage or shedding

Look at what comes out. A shed hair has a small pale bulb at one end — the root, released by the follicle at the end of its cycle. A broken hair has no bulb at either end; it is a fragment, snapped somewhere along its length, and it is usually shorter than the hair around it.

Where it comes from matters too. Shedding comes away evenly across the scalp when you wash or comb. Breakage concentrates where there is friction and tension — the lengths, the ends, around a tight parting or where a plait is pulled.

Water causes the second, not the first. If what you are seeing has bulbs on it, or if the parting is widening and the temples are thinning, the water is not your problem and a filter will not fix it. That is a shedding pattern, and it has causes worth testing for.

Here is the nuance that most articles skip. A randomised trial in the UK installed water softeners in the homes of children with established eczema and found no meaningful benefit over usual care. So the association is real, and softening the water is not the treatment. The barrier still has to be treated as a barrier — which in practice means how you wash and what you put on afterwards.

The shower filter question, answered honestly

Most shower filters sold in this city contain activated carbon, KDF media, or vitamin C. Those remove or neutralise chlorine, and chlorine is a genuine irritant, so people often do notice something.

What almost none of them do is soften the water. Removing calcium and magnesium takes ion exchange — a resin bed that has to be regenerated with salt — and that is a plumbed-in softener, not a cartridge screwed onto a shower head. A filter that is not doing ion exchange is not addressing hardness at all, whatever the packaging implies.

So: a shower filter may help if chlorine is your irritant. It will not change what hardness does. And on the strength of that eczema trial, even a real softener is not a treatment for skin disease.

If you want to know which you are dealing with, the tap and the shower head tell you. Scale means hardness. No scale and irritated skin points more towards chlorine or towards something that has nothing to do with the water.

What actually helps

For hair: a chelating or clarifying shampoo occasionally rather than routinely — every second or third week is plenty, and weekly will strip more than it removes. Condition the lengths every wash, because a smoothed cuticle is what stops the tangling that causes the breakage. Rinse for longer than feels necessary; most residue is under-rinsing rather than the water itself. A final rinse from stored or filtered water is a small, real improvement if it is practical for you.

For skin: a gentle non-soap cleanser rather than a bar, because that is where most of the residue comes from. Shorter and cooler showers. Moisturiser onto skin that is still damp, within a few minutes of getting out — the timing matters more than the product.

For both: fix the friction as well as the water. Tight plaits and tight buns, aggressive towel drying and combing wet hair do more damage than hardness does, and they are free to change.

When to stop blaming the water

If the hair coming out has bulbs on it. If your parting is widening or the temples are receding. If shedding has been going on for more than three months. If it started after an illness, a fever, a pregnancy, a crash diet or a new medicine. If there is itching, flaking or soreness on the scalp. Or if you have changed the water and nothing changed with it.

Any of those points away from the water and towards something testable — thyroid function, iron stores, vitamin D, and the hormonal panel where the history calls for it. Those are ordinary blood tests, and an underactive thyroid or low ferritin is a far more common answer than a water tank.

Water is a real problem and a small one. It is also the most convenient explanation available, which is why it absorbs months that would be better spent finding out what is actually happening.
