How it works

  • Controlled micro-injuries trigger the skin's own repair response
  • Surrounding untreated tissue speeds healing, which is why fractional approaches are preferred
  • New collagen forms over weeks to months — improvement is gradual, not immediate
  • Multiple lighter sessions are safer in deeper skin than one aggressive pass

Sessions & downtime

Typically three to six sessions spaced four to six weeks apart, depending on what is being treated and how the skin responds.

Expect redness and a sandpaper texture for several days, sometimes light flaking. Most people plan resurfacing around social commitments.

Is this suitable for Indian skin?

In Fitzpatrick IV–V skin the main consideration is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation rather than the resurfacing itself. This is managed by priming the skin beforehand, using conservative density and energy settings, spacing sessions adequately, and strict sun protection afterwards. Aggressive single-session approaches marketed as dramatic transformations carry a materially higher pigmentation risk in Indian skin.

Aftercare

  • Strict sun avoidance and daily broad-spectrum sunscreen for several weeks
  • Bland moisturiser and gentle cleansing while the skin settles
  • No actives — retinoids, acids, scrubs — until cleared
  • Do not pick flaking skin

When we would not treat

  • Active acne breakouts or skin infection in the area
  • Recent isotretinoin use
  • A tendency to keloid scarring (assessed individually)
  • Recent sun exposure or active tan

Frequently asked

Will laser resurfacing remove my acne scars completely?

No credible treatment erases scars entirely. The realistic goal is a marked reduction in depth and visibility across a course of sessions. Results vary with scar type, depth and how long they have been present.

Is resurfacing safe for brown skin?

Yes, with appropriate settings. The risk in deeper tones is temporary post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which is minimised by conservative parameters, priming and sun protection.

How long is the downtime?

Usually several days of redness and light flaking. It is worth planning sessions when you have a quiet week rather than before an event.

When will I see results?

Texture change becomes noticeable after a few weeks as new collagen forms, and continues improving for months after the final session.

Can it be combined with other treatments?

Often yes — plans frequently combine resurfacing with microneedling or pigment-directed care, sequenced rather than stacked in one visit.
