How it works
- Light energy is absorbed by melanin in the hair shaft and follicle
- That energy converts to heat, damaging the follicle's regenerative structures
- Only follicles in the active growth (anagen) phase respond, which is why sessions are spaced
- Contact cooling protects the surface skin during each pulse
Sessions & downtime
Most areas need six or more sessions spaced four to eight weeks apart, with occasional maintenance afterwards. Coarse hair on the face often needs more than body areas.
Mild redness and a warm sensation for a few hours is usual. Most people return to normal activity the same day, avoiding sun, saunas and swimming for 48 hours.
Is this suitable for Indian skin?
Most Indian patients are Fitzpatrick type IV or V, where melanin in the surrounding skin competes with the melanin in the hair. Longer wavelengths penetrate deeper and interact less with surface pigment, which is why they are preferred for deeper skin tones. We patch test first, start conservative and increase settings across sessions. The main risk in deeper skin is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and it is largely a function of settings and sun exposure rather than the treatment itself.
Aftercare
- Broad-spectrum sunscreen daily on treated areas — non-negotiable for avoiding pigmentation
- No waxing, threading or plucking between sessions; shaving is fine
- Avoid hot showers, steam and gym for 24–48 hours
- Report any blistering or unusual darkening promptly rather than waiting for the next session
When we would not treat
- Active infection or open skin in the treatment area
- Recent isotretinoin use — a gap is generally required
- Pregnancy (treatment is usually deferred)
- Recent heavy sun exposure or an active tan
Frequently asked
Is laser hair removal permanent?
No. The accurate description is long-term hair reduction — density and thickness reduce substantially over a course, but most patients need occasional maintenance sessions. Any clinic promising permanence is overstating what the technology does.
Is laser hair removal safe for Indian skin?
Yes, when the wavelength and settings are chosen for deeper skin tones and a patch test is done first. The risk is not the laser but inappropriate settings for the skin type.
How many sessions will I need?
Commonly six or more, spaced four to eight weeks apart, because only actively growing follicles respond to each session. Facial and hormonal hair often needs more.
Does it hurt?
Most people describe a warm snapping sensation. Contact cooling makes it comfortable for the large majority, though sensitive areas such as the upper lip are felt more.
Can I have it done on tanned skin?
We usually wait for a tan to settle. Treating actively tanned skin raises the risk of pigmentation and burns, so we may reschedule if you have had recent heavy sun exposure.
Does it work on white, grey or very fine hair?
Poorly. The laser targets pigment, so hair with little or no melanin responds far less predictably. This is assessed at consultation rather than assumed.
